"I was certain they wouldn't last a week."

A friend writes to point out that Steve Reynolds, who worked with Bono and Ali in Ethiopia in 1985, has written a piece about the experience for World Vision's Spring 2012 magazine (scroll to pg 30 in the PDF). A few non-PDF excerpts are here. I heard Steve speak at a workshop about AIDS in Africa back in -- perhaps summer 2004, when I was doing book promotion? -- and he told some stories from the experience then as well. I love the line about God doing "eye surgery" on people who work with the poor, especially in light of Adam Clayton's comment that the effect on a crowd of seeing U2 live involves "brain surgery" and "heart surgery."
